Drivers using Exit 308 in East Stroudsburg will be routed onto newly built ramps and through a new roundabout this week. PennDOT said the shift would happen Wednesday as the agency wraps up one phase of the Interstate 80 expansion and launches another in Stroud Township.
The Exit 308 interchange has been under reconstruction since April 2022. Sean Brown, PennDOT District 5 press officer, told WNEP that traffic will move off the old ramps and onto the new ones. The roundabout will connect the interchange with Green Tree and Prospect streets in East Stroudsburg.
"We are going to be taking traffic off of the old Exit 308 ramps and putting them on the newly built 308 ramps and opening our roundabout that is going to connect our interchange with local roads in East Stroudsburg," Brown said.
Meanwhile, a new construction phase is getting underway in Stroud Township. Nighttime lane restrictions in both directions on I-80 between Exits 302 and 304 were scheduled to begin Monday, Oct. 26, according to a PennDOT press release. WNEP reported the restrictions cover the stretch from Main Street to Bartonsville.
The Stroud Township project will reconstruct and widen I-80 from west of Exit 303 to Exit 304. Crews will also reconfigure the Exit 303 interchange, removing old ramps, adding new ones and connecting a new structure to Route 611. Route 611 will be reconstructed between Lifeline Road and Bridge Street.
Brown told WNEP the broader goal is to overhaul a highway built in the 1960s that can no longer handle current traffic volumes. PennDOT data shows this section of I-80 carries an average of 45,781 vehicles per day. Route 611 in the area averages 20,364.
H&K Group Inc. of Skippack is the general contractor on the $232.9 million project. PennDOT expects the first phase of Stroud Township work to continue through October 2032.
The Stroud Township phase is the first leg of a larger reconstruction of I-80 from west of Exit 303 to Exit 307. PennDOT also recently presented plans for a future I-80 and Route 33 project, currently set to begin in 2030, according to the Pocono Record.
After the initial nighttime restrictions, drivers should expect sporadic lane closures on I-80 and Route 611 as work progresses. Travelers can check conditions at 511PA.com or by calling 511.
